Hello! Welcome to my blog.
I am excited that you are here with me right now as I embark on this new adventure. As many of my friends and family are aware, I have been threatening/promising to start a blog for a very long time. It has always been a future project that has blossomed in my mind, but until now, never made the leap from my over-active brain onto the electronic page. If I had a penny for every blog-worthy thought I’ve had while showering, driving, and even dreaming, I’m certain I’d be a whole lot wealthier than I am today. Similarly, if my grandmother had owned a tricycle, I might have inherited three wheels.
In all seriousness – although this blog has been a work in progress for years, I truly do not know where it is going. My hope is that it will grow into something personal, relatable, thought-provoking, and meaningful to my readers and to me. Beginnings are always hard, filled with infinite potential and punctuated by nagging uncertainty. I am thrilled to find myself at the front end of this evolution, and quite curious to discover where we are headed.
I’ve done some research about blogging. I’m told a good blogger creates a niche. I should choose a topic for this blog. I could blog about music or cats or mental health or gun violence prevention or politics – all topics that are endlessly fascinating to me. I should cast myself as an authority in one of these areas, cultivating an audience that wants to learn more about my supposed expertise. The key, they say, is to keep it focused, topic centered, and specific.
And yet, as I’ve pondered what I should blog about – I am unable to settle on just one area of interest, or even a particular style of expression. To choose one topic requires that I bid farewell to all the others. What if change my mind? What if I start a blog about classical music, but then find myself wanting to write about healthcare in America? What if I start my blog with a light-hearted tone, but then, without warning, it becomes deeply serious? What if one day I want to share a provocative essay about morality in government but the next day I choose to post a limerick about the natural life of sliced cheese? Readers, beware. I make no promises that there will be any consistency here.
As is often stated in the American social/political arena, our diversity makes us stronger. Applying this sentiment to the diversity within my own self, I choose to embrace the notion that rigidity of focus is counterproductive, at least in this particular forum. My unpredictable style of self-expression will be a feature, not a bug of this blog, where I will consider an unlimited array of topics, from the trivial to the profound and everything in-between. As I start this project, I am excited to welcome you to these as yet uncharted regions of my headspace. I invite you to join me on this journey, to check back frequently, and to connect with me along the way to share your comments, insights, reactions, and knowledge.
Ready or not, here we go!
